Word Studies for the Week of September 2, 2018
September 2 ● Our Lighthouse: Renewing the Heart ● Mark 7:1-8, 14-23
Do the Pharisees who question Jesus about his disciples not washing their hands have a point? If so, what is it?
Why is Jesus upset with the Pharisees? Is there something wrong with what they are teaching? (See vs. 6-8)
What could be the negative motivations of Pharisees that Jesus seems to be talking about? Are there some positive ones?
Read Mark 7:15; is this how we normally think about what corrupts people? Or do we blame the things outside of ourselves? (Think about those who blame music, movies, or other influences when they are caught in a crime)
Is Jesus downplaying the role of negative influences in our lives, or is he demonstrating how they can become a snare for us?
What are the things that you struggle with that lead your life astray? (Selfishness, fear, greed, etc.)
What tools or practices do you use to uncover your own motivations for acting the way that you do? How do you learn about yourself?
