Word Studies for the Week of August 20th, 2017

August 20 ● The Gift of Faith: The Listening Ear ● Matthew 15: 21-28

How is it more difficult for us to listen to someone from a different background, ethnicity, economic class or religion? What things make it harder for us to engage people different than us?

The woman whose daughter is afflicted by a demon is called a Canaanite; why would her identity set off alarm bells in the minds of the disciples?

If Jesus was only sent to the lost sheep of Israel, how come he heals the Canaanite woman’s child? Who might God be sending to the rest of his children?

How is the exchange between Jesus and the woman in Matthew 15:26-27 disturbing? How is it inspiring?

What does the exchange with Jesus say about what the woman would do her daughter? Would you be able to do the same?

In what ways, would you characterize the woman’s faith as great? What things was she letting go of to encounter Jesus? What things must you give up to encounter Jesus?
